Generations

We can learn so much from elephants but I think the one thing that stands out for me is the incredible bonding that the family unit is built around. Maternally led, the females rule the roost and males toe the line until they are expelled from the herd and they themselves form small bachelor herds. Older bulls occasionally follow herds or interact with them in a protective capacity. To spend time around a herd of elephants is an emotional experience as you quickly realize family means everything. When they lose a member through whatever reason, be it poaching or drought, the loss resonates through the herd right from baby to leader. Ultimately, all decisions made by the Matriarch are for the wellbeing and survival of the herd.
